And Here We Are
-
Where did the name of your studio come from?
We started doing custom paper goods, especially invitations and announcements. “And Here We Are” celebrates being in a new stage of life (And here we are, getting married! And here we are, having a baby!). Besides that, it’s just a fun phrase to say.

Who is on your team, and how did you come together?
Currently, I, Meghan Hopkins Sokorai, am the whole team. My husband John used to work with me full time, but went back to a day job last year when we found out we had a baby on the way— he still helps out whenever he can, and I hire part time and temp helpers as needed.

How did you get into design and letterpress printing?
I went to school for graphic design– and back again for typeface design. I always loved letterpress printing, which I’d discovered in college, and was really excited about the idea of getting my hands dirty again. And Here We Are launched in 2012 out of our apartment in Greenpoint, Brooklyn; it started after I went a little nuts on our personal wedding invitations and paper goods, and they got a bunch of press, which led to several more custom weddings. The rest is history!

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
Inspiration can be found anywhere and everywhere. It’s important to get out of the studio and out into the world: travel, see movies, listen to music, go to art shows, and just participate in culture as much as possible. Most of my inspiration isn’t found in the world of stationery, but in pop culture, interior design, house plants, pets, or whatever might be going on in my life at the time. Sometimes I work backwards from an ink color I really want to use or a print method I want to try.
